Bio - Jamalyn Nelson

Web-Jami_Nelson-0590-EditMy name is Jamalyn or Jami as most of you know me and I am The Garden Sleuth.   I would much rather be outside in my yard, but like everyone else, I have to earn a living.  I graduated from Texas A & M with a degree in Landscape Architecture.  After graduating I worked for a retail nursery and learned more about plants in one year than in four years of college.   After that I designed landscape plans for new homes all over Houston.  One of my Houston builders moved to Austin and asked me to design the landscapes for his new model home park. Once in Austin I never left and started my own design/build firm known as Nelson's Landscape Services. The first year in business we were landscaping for at least fifteen new home builders all over Austin.  This was over 20 years ago. In 1996 we contracted with Sun City Texas in Georgetown to landscape over 2000 homes and several of their commercial projects.

I have since had the opportunity to design projects all over Texas and in several other states.   My projects have been as small as creating new flower beds for homeowners to commercial projects that were half a million dollars and more.

I have been a member of the Williamson County Child Welfare Board for over 15 years.  We are all volunteers appointed by the County Commissioners to approve expenditures for the foster children in Williamson County.  We have county money that we must use for the basic needs of the children, like medical and clothing. Then once a year we have our annual fund raiser to help pay for the extras like summer camps, senior class rings, school program extras, drivers education and much more.

If I'm not volunteering for the board, working in my garden, or working on my web site, then I always love a good book.
